In this spin on the fairy tale, Hansel & Gretel are now bounty hunters who track and kill witches all over the world.
There are a number of movies coming out that take fairly tales or a certain character and put a interesting or dark spin on the movie. Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” comes to mind. More similar To Hansel and Gretel are “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter “ and “Van Helsing” starring Hugh Jackman. But one has to ask: are these movies worth making? Alice in Wonderland, although it performed at the box office was not favored by critics, and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire hunter didn’t do too well in the box office or with the critics following in the footsteps of Van Helsing. Hansel and Gretel promises action, witches and by the looks of it, good 3D. We also have Jeremy Renner, hot off the big blockbuster hit “The Avengers”. It looks as though they’re trying to cash in on some of his fame as his co-star, Gemma Arterton, isn’t as well known.
So is this a good movie? I would have to say yes and no. The acting proved that Jeremy Renner isn’t bad and the same goes for Gemma Arterton. Although the acting isn’t bad it doesn’t mean it couldn’t have been better. The story definitely suffers from trying to be too edgy. There are some great lines but the plot isn’t has hardcore as it sets out to be. Also, right away you don’t really have a villain that you’re sure is a real threat. You have townspeople and a sheriff who are against the witch hunters in their small town and you know the reason they’ve been called to the
town, but you don’t really have much sense of danger until you’re partway thru the film. The action was alright. It seemed like the so-called witch hunters knew what they were doing but it sure took them a long time to do it. It took quite a while just to take down one witch but in the later parts of the film they have no problem defeating many more witches with just a little help. That being said, there are a lot of cool things on the film such as gadgets and weapons that are sort of modern but could have existed in the 17th century. Also, some of the creatures were, for the most part, all practical effects. Most of the movies nowadays take the CG rout but in this movie you could tell they took their time with the effects and the sets.
So should you go out and see this movie right away like I did? Maybe if you like good 3D and the subject matter. Or maybe if you like the talent involved and some cool practical visuals, but if you want to see a good action movie I’m afraid I’m going to have to say skip this one until you can rent it, or better yet, it comes on Netflix. These kinds of movies are fun but they’re making a bad name for themselves and it seems like studios are just making them to compete with one another. Hopefully, we will get a good, fun, over-the-top, fantasy action film that really holds its own. For now I’m afraid we’re just going to have to settle for these over-produced movies that lack heart and story. In my opinion, they are diamonds in the rough and in good time we could get what all these movies are setting out to become, which is GREAT!
