Struck by Lightning, by Chris Colfer, is the story of Carson Phillips, a dedicated and ambitious young writer. His dream since he was a child was to become the editor of the New Yorker. To do that, he plans to get into Northwestern University, and escape his small hometown of Clover. Carson isn’t afraid to go for what he wants, and he’ll do almost anything for it, like blackmailing other students into contributing to his literary magazine. He is ruthless in his determination and this definitely proves it.
The story has a dark side to it that touches on sexuality, self-harm and other elements that play into high-school life. Different students that Carson blackmails deal with some of these issues. I think that the way Colfer describes high school is quite accurate, if a little on the negative side. High school can be a good experience a bad experience or downright terrible for some.
Struck by Lightening has been made into a movie with author Chris Colfer starring as Carson Phillips. If you watch Glee, you know Colfer from his role as Kurt Hummel. He’s a good actor and since he created the novel and character, he’ll likely play a very good Carson Phillips.
I thought this book was funny and enjoyable and if you have a dark sense of humour, you will be laughing your way through it. Compared to other books I’ve read, the writing is good and descriptive. There’s a considerable amount of swearing and it has one of the most shocking endings I have ever read. EVER. I’d give this 8 out 10 stars.
